Robert Browning school, Southwark

Client: Southwark Council

Located on a compact, urban site Robert Browning School suffered from a lack of space and good facilities. AMA put together a strategic plan aimed at maximising use of the existing spaces and creating new, flexible learning opportunities.

After developing the brief, AMA carried out a full reconfiguration of this Victorian school building. Through a series of major structural interventions, we sensitively altered the existing building, providing a prominent new entrance that welcomes visitors, improves both security and accessibility and bolsters the school’s identity within its community.

The alterations transformed wide circulation areas into useful learning spaces while clustering ground floor classrooms and toilet facilities to improve the building’s organisation and legibility. A new nursery building was constructed using prefabricated timber elements and the play space transformed to include spaces for both play and learning. A green roof, nature garden and mature planting contribute to an exciting and sustainable school design.
