The new National Library of Greece is part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Athens which includes a home for the Greek National Opera as well as a park.
AMA worked with architects Renzo Piano Building Workshop to understand the requirements of the new National Library. The new building has a much larger book capacity and a wider range of functions and spaces than the existing National Library. The project encompasses a wide range of learning spaces for all ages, from story-telling areas for youngsters, through to rare manuscript vaults for academics. We analysed the proposals against several possible scenarios and then refined the designs to ensure the new library’s spaces and organisation are functional yet adaptable.
Our detailed research and evaluation also informed the design of furniture to create a wide range of environments for visitors to the library.
